Project Karigari of Literacy India stands out as a harbinger for skilling, generating greater social inclusivity and economic empowerment to the underprivileged communities in the rural and semi-urban areas. The Project’s key role is to empower women and youth to become agents of transformation and social development.

The present generation youth are relatively active and inquisitive than their predecessors and for them “seeing is believing”. Over the years, Project Karigari has been mobilising, skilling, orienting and providing exposure visits at several institutions to learn about variety of courses, its importance and how best they can contribute to the overall growth and development of self and the nation. During exposure visits the students were informed about the various technical courses and the openings vis-à-vis the shift towards Industry 4.0, due to increasing interconnectivity and smart automation.  Students were familiarized about the numerous technical courses such as AC Training, Electrical Training, and IT skill Training.

Beyond the traditional skills is the realm of new age skills that are aligned with changing demands of a modern society and developing economy.  One such sector is Health. It is estimated that India needs almost 500 million skilled and semi-skilled people across different sectors, Health Care sector is one of them.

Gauging the need of the hour, Literacy India is providing and supporting skill training to youths, especially girls, in courses like Paramedical and Nursing Care.  Literacy India has been particularly and responsibly been involved in supporting the tribal heartlands of West Bengal and Jharkhand.  Therefore, after a screening process, 10 girls of this tribal belt were mobilised and a select group of 5 girl-students were finally selected from District Purulia and District Bokaro’s Chandankiyari block and enrolled at Nursing Training School for a two-year Diploma Programme ANM – Auxiliary Nursing & Midwifery [Nursing]. Few of Literacy India students  already joined institutions like Paras and Max Hospital as paramedics.

Kajal

Kajal’s story is an example of sheer determination and the power of education and skill building.   She lives with her sisters in the Saidulajab village slum area in Delhi. Kajal had little motivation towards work due to the ad-hoc nature of her parents’ employment, as well as their meagre income. However, having completed her  schooling with Remedial Support from Literacy India Centre and on finishing her schooling, she started looking for work.

Literacy India encouraged  her to enrol in the General Duty Assistant (GDA) training program and organised exposure visit to the facility at Visan Foundation,Gurgaon. The course structure was elaborate and placement focussed. She joined the course and after completion, she was placed in Fortis Hospital with a salary of INR 17,000/-

Kajal is grateful to Literacy India for connecting her with this opportunity, which has not only provided her with a job but also opened possibilities for a career in the health sector. Kajal’s success story highlights the importance of providing access to education and skills training to underserved communities. With the right opportunities and support, individuals like Kajal can break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future for themselves and their families.

The impact of such initiatives is not limited to individuals but can transform entire communities by creating a pool of skilled and empowered individuals who can contribute to the growth and development of their society.
