A Remarkable Journey of Resilience and Empowerment

This is the inspiring story of Soni, a 23-year-old girl who faced adversity head-on and fought tirelessly for the well-being of her family, particularly her elder brother. After losing her parents in her early twenties, Soni took on the immense responsibility of managing all the domestic work in her household. Unfortunately, this meant that she had to leave her studies after completing the IX standard to ensure the family’s sustenance during a crucial time. 

In her search for a better future, Soni discovered Literacy India in April 2023, she joined the Beauty & Wellness skill training course, driven by her childhood passion for makeup, mehndi, and hairdressing. Determined to pursue her dreams, Soni pursued the detailed study of Beauty and Wellness. 

During her orientation at Literacy India, Soni found inspiration in the film “Girl Star” and the documentary “Udaan,” fueling her desire for self-reliance. Additionally, she attended financial and digital literacy sessions, equipping her with valuable knowledge and skills.  Soni’s hard work paid off throughout the training program as she earned 2500 rupees by offering beauty services such as eyebrow shaping, facials, mehndi, and bleaching. She seized the opportunity to learn while earning, applying her theoretical knowledge to practical expertise. However, challenges arose when community members expected her services for free as a trainee. Nevertheless, the supportive team at Literacy India provided counselling and conducted motivational sessions, helping Soni regain her confidence. 

Soni’s story exemplifies resilience, determination, and empowerment. Despite her obstacles, she found her passion and vocation in the beauty and wellness industry. With the guidance of Literacy India and her unwavering spirit, Soni is transforming her skills and passion into a sustainable livelihood, paving the way for a brighter future for herself and her family.
