Empowering Communities Through Sustainability and Health
Ode to Sustainability: Rebooting Education, Reviving the Planet — Literacy India’s Green Tech Approach
At Literacy India, our commitment goes beyond education—we embrace sustainability as a core principle that drives every step we take. Recognizing the urgent need to protect our planet while empowering underprivileged communities, we actively integrate environmentally responsible practices into our mission.
Through projects like Rain-Water-and-Solar, Recycling, Arogyam, and Tribal Empowerment, we address critical challenges, foster sustainability, and create lasting impact across diverse communities.
Why These Initiatives Matter
We extend the life of technology by using refurbished computers and tablets in our digital learning programs. This practice not only prevents electronic waste from polluting the environment but also conserves precious natural resources and lowers the carbon footprint linked with manufacturing new devices. By supporting a circular economy, we teach our students and communities the value of reuse, repair, and recycling.
Access to electricity remains a challenge for over 36% of schools in India, directly affecting learning quality and attendance. Literacy India addresses this gap by installing rooftop solar power systems in remote and underserved centers. These solar installations provide reliable, clean energy that powers lighting, digital classrooms, and essential amenities like water purification.
Schools equipped with 1kW solar systems
generate approximately 1,500 kWh annually, reducing electricity costs and
cutting carbon emissions by 31 tonnes—equivalent to planting 49 trees. Solar
power improves learning environments by enabling longer, better-lit teaching
hours, supports use of digital tools, reduces dropout rates, and instills
environmental responsibility in students.
Through these green tech initiatives,Literacy India demonstrates that sustainable education is possible and necessary. By blending innovation with environmental care, we are rebooting education while reviving the planet—empowering future generations to thrive in a healthier, greener world.

Since 2007, Literacy India has championed
environmental sustainability through its Rain Water Harvesting initiatives.
Over this period, we have successfully conserved an impressive 26 lakh
liters of water, significantly reducing dependency on external water
sources. This effort not only supports water security in our communities but
also promotes eco-friendly practices aligned with sustainable development
goals. Our commitment to water conservation reflects Literacy India’s broader
vision of nurturing responsible citizens who value and protect natural
resources for future generations.
Since 2007, IINDHA’s in-house Waste Paper Recycling Plant has produced over 15.5 lakh sheets of recycled paper, saving approximately 500 trees in the process. This initiative is a key part of our dedication to sustainability and aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) 2030.
Our plant transforms discarded paper materials into high-quality recycled paper and beautifully crafted stationery. Corporate employees actively engage in hands-on paper-making workshops, fostering awareness about the value of paper conservation in India.
Another innovative effort repurposes waste wood used for packaging into hand-painted wall décor, supported by solar panels installed on Literacy India’s campus. This circular approach not only reduces waste but also creates meaningful livelihood opportunities and showcases our holistic commitment to environmental sustainability.
