Anjali Hembram hails from the remote village of Madandih in Neturia block, situated in the Purulia District of West Bengal. Her father, a small farmer, supplements his income during the off-season by working as a laborer in a local sponge iron factory. Anjali’s mother takes care of their household responsibilities. Anjali has completed her education up to grade 10.
In 2022, Anjali’s life took a positive turn when the dedicated staff of Literacy India reached out to her. They mobilized their resources and encouraged her to enroll in a tailoring course at the Raghunathpur Centre. Over the course of six months, Anjali diligently attended the training sessions and acquired various stitching techniques. She mastered the art of making garments such as petticoats, nighties, blouses, kurtas, pants, and shirts.
During her training, Anjali had the opportunity to participate in a session on financial literacy organized by volunteers from Master Card. This experience further fueled her ambition to open a tailoring shop in her village. However, shortly after completing her training, she got married and relocated to Jhantipahari, Bankura, in West Bengal. Despite the change in her circumstances, Anjali shared her dream of opening a tailoring shop with her supportive husband.
Realizing the lack of women’s tailoring services within a three-kilometer radius of their village, Anjali and her husband made the decision to set up the shop in their own home. They pooled their resources and acquired the necessary materials, eventually opening the shop. Anjali started catering to the demands of the local community, offering a wide range of garments such as kurtis, nighties, petticoats, blouses, and alteration services at affordable rates.
Within a short span of time, Anjali’s tailoring shop gained immense popularity. She received a steady stream of work from the local community and began accepting orders from the market as well. As her workload increased, Anjali employed two women helpers to assist her. Today, Anjali Hembram earns approximately 8000 rupees per month from her thriving tailoring business.
Anjali’s inspiring journey demonstrates the transformative power of skill development and empowerment initiatives. With the support of Literacy India and the encouragement of her husband, she was able to turn her passion for tailoring into a successful business venture, overcoming obstacles and creating a positive impact on her community. Anjali’s determination and entrepreneurial spirit serve as an inspiration to others, showcasing the potential for growth and self-sufficiency that lies within every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances.
