Literacy India is transforming lives through innovative, need-based interventions—combining skill development, education, and simple solutions like solar lighting. By enabling livelihoods, supporting learning, and addressing real challenges, it empowers individuals to become self-reliant. These stories reflect how timely support and practical training are creating sustainable impact across underserved communities.
A Daily Grind, A Bigger Goal
Gautam, 30, lives in Carterpuri, Gurugram, and hails from Munger, Bihar. Due to severe financial constraints, he could study only up to Grade 6–7, despite starting his education with Literacy India. Early responsibilities pushed him into small jobs, including tailoring—work he never felt drawn to.
Determined to build a better future, he pursued his natural interest in mechanical work by enrolling in the Mobile and Computer Hardware Repairing course at Literacy India Community College.
Balancing work (as a milk delivery person in the early mornings)and learning, Gautam attended classes daily after his morning shift with discipline and focus. He progressed from basic troubleshooting to fault diagnosis, component replacement, and even chip-level repair. Demonstrating initiative and creativity, he also designed a multi-pin charger capable of charging eight phones simultaneously.
Through the Grassroot Business Incubation Programme (GBIP), he gained practical knowledge in costing, pricing, market strategy, and professional communication. In February 2026, with seed funding support from Literacy India, Gautam successfully opened his own mobile repair shop—an important milestone inaugurated during a visit by the KPMG Team.
Gautam now aims to achieve financial stability and empower his family further. “Now that I have my own shop and earn steadily, I want my wife to learn a skill too at Literacy India. I believe when both husband and wife are skilled, we can change our family’s future and also inspire others in our community.”
His journey reflects resilience, continuous learning, and the transformative impact of skill development in creating pathways to self-reliance.
Two homes, one change
In the remote, forested regions along the border of Purulia (West Bengal) and Jharkhand, access to electricity remains a daily challenge for many families. For women like Mangali Hansda of Madhupur Village and Jagori Hansda of Munibera, evenings once meant darkness, uncertainty, and limited opportunities for their children.
Mangali lives with her husband, young daughter, and sister-in-law in a modest clay home far from the main village, with no access to electricity. Daily life depended on kerosene lamps and a small rechargeable light that required long trips to charge. Managing household responsibilities after sunset was difficult, and her sister-in-law struggled to study in poor lighting.
Similarly, Jagori, 37, faced comparable challenges in Munibera. Despite briefly having electricity, financial constraints led to its disconnection, leaving her family reliant on dim lighting. Her two children, both enrolled at Literacy India’s community programs, found it hard to study, while household tasks became increasingly difficult and unsafe after dark.
Recognizing these shared realities, Literacy India provided solar lights to both households—simple interventions that brought meaningful change. Today, Mangali can manage her home more efficiently, and her sister-in-law studies with greater ease. In Jagori’s home, her children can now focus on their education at night, while she carries out daily tasks with improved safety and comfort.
These stories, though separate, reflect a common transformation. Through the distribution of solar lanterns, Literacy India is not only addressing a basic need but also enabling education, improving safety, and restoring a sense of dignity and possibility in remote communities.
Powered to Progress
Twenty-two-year-old Nisha Shaw, lives with her family in C Road, Bamungachhi. Her father runs a small tea shop, earning the family’s only steady income—while her mother is a homemaker.
Determined to support her family, Nisha enrolled in the Tailoring course at Literacy India in 2025 after learning about it from her sister. She successfully completed the six-month training program, scoring 70% in her final assessment, and began working as a tailor specializing in kantha stitch.
Her journey, however, was not without obstacles. Frequent power cuts and irregular electricity supply at home disrupted her work, affecting both her income and confidence.
Recognizing her need, Literacy India provided Nisha with a solar light. This simple intervention proved transformative. With reliable lighting, she can now continue her stitching even during outages, improving both her productivity and earnings.
Today, Nisha earns around ₹300–₹400 through her work, contributing to her household income and gaining financial independence.
Lighting the Way to Self Reliance
Sushama Hazra, a resident of Santinagar, comes from a modest family of six. With her husband’s small flower business as the main source of income, meeting daily needs was often a challenge. Determined to support her family, Sushama aspired to become financially independent.
She enrolled in a Tailoring and Dress Making course, where she gained practical skills along with confidence in her abilities. Inspired by the training, she began taking small stitching orders from her neighbourhood, including saree fall, picco work, and basic salwar suits.
Over the past six months, her work has steadily grown through word of mouth. Today, she earns around ₹2000–₹3000 per month, contributing to her household and building a sense of self-reliance.
Her journey expanded further through opportunities with INDHA, where she gained exposure to new designs and more consistent work. With support from Literacy India in the form of a solar light, she can now work longer hours with better efficiency and improved quality.
