Three Decades of Literacy India, Countless Journeys of Hope

As  Literacy India steps into its third decade, it is a moment not merely to look back at years gone by, but to reflect on lives quietly transformed through learning, dignity, and opportunity.

What began as a belief that every child deserves a fair chance at education has today grown into evolving projects that continue to stand firmly beside children and families living on the margins of society.

For many children from underserved communities, good schooling still remains a distant dream. Yet at Village Bajghera in Gurgaon, Haryana, Vidyapeeth has continued to nurture young minds through its unique “learning by doing” approach, blending education with vocational skills from an early age. Far away in Village Jharna, Jharkhand, Vidyamandir carries the same spirit forward, proving that meaningful education can flourish even in the most challenging circumstances.

Alongside these schools, the Gurukul Project has become a bridge of hope for students pursuing education in schools, colleges, IITs, and skill universities where Literacy India does not directly run centres. Through smart classes, mentoring, and continued guidance, many first-generation learners have found the confidence to dream beyond limitations once imposed upon them.

This year, the Board Examination results of 2026 brought with them stories far deeper than marksheets and percentages. Four young students from Vidyapeeth and the Gurukul Project emerged as symbols of perseverance and quiet courage. Behind their achievements are journeys marked by financial hardship, personal struggles, social barriers, and moments when giving up may have seemed easier than moving ahead.

Yet they chose to continue.

Their success belongs not only to them, but also to families who held on to hope, teachers who stood beside them patiently, and communities slowly beginning to believe that change is possible.

Chitralekha Kumar — “Rooted in the Fields, Rising as a Topper”

For Chitralekha Kumar from Gobindapur village, in West Bengal, education became a pathway out of hardship after losing her father at a very young age. Raised by her mother, Sumita Kumar, who worked tirelessly as a domestic helper and farm labourer, Chitralekha grew up witnessing struggle closely. Yet, her mother’s dream remained unwavering — that her daughters would receive the education she herself was denied after being married at just 14.

Chitralekha joined Literacy India’s Gurukul Project in 2018 while studying in Class V at Baghmundi High School, Saragdih. Through immersive learning methods, smart classes, STEAM activities, model-making, and digital education, she gradually overcame her fear of difficult subjects and evolved into a confident learner and active classroom participant.

Her dedication and perseverance culminated in a remarkable achievement in 2026, when she secured an outstanding 86% in the Higher Secondary Examination, emerging as the topper of her school. Today, Chitralekha dreams of pursuing English Honours or Journalism and aspires to build a career in the field of E-Journalism. Her success has become an inspiration for many girls in her village, encouraging them to continue their education despite social and economic challenges.

Kajala Kumar — “A Village Girl with the Courage to Dream Big”

In another corner of rural Bengal, Kajala Kumar from Chatatar village battled a different reality — financial instability and the absence of educational support. Her father, a migrant labourer, travelled across states in search of work, while Kajala grew up in a modest household with limited resources. As a first-generation learner, her educational journey was filled with challenges from the very beginning.

Kajala joined Literacy India’s Gurukul Project while studying in Grade V at the government-run Baghmundi High School in Saragdih. Robotics, STEAM education, science kits, smart classes, and Physics Wallah online sessions slowly transformed her relationship with education. Unlike traditional rote learning, the immersive learning model encouraged her to explore, experiment, ask questions, and actively participate in the classroom. Along with strengthening her academic foundation, these experiences also helped improve her communication skills, confidence, and problem-solving abilities.

With determination and continuous mentoring, Kajala secured 67% in her Madhyamik Examination (Class X). Speaking about her dreams, she says with confidence, “I am now one step closer to becoming a police officer. After completing Class XII, I want to serve society and bring positive change to my community.”

Sumit — “Building a Future Through Science, Discipline, and Determination”

Coming from a modest family that migrated from Uttar Pradesh to Gurugram in search of better opportunities, Sumit grew up closely witnessing financial struggles, with his father working as a gardener and his mother as a domestic help. Yet, his discipline, determination, and deep interest in Science and Mathematics kept him firmly focused on his goals.

Through Literacy India’s Vidyapeeth program, Sumit found opportunities that went far beyond classroom learning. His curiosity and analytical thinking were nurtured through robotics clubs, STEM activities, project-based learning, and participation in inter-school competitions, all of which strengthened his creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and passion for science and technology. Exposure to vocational training in Computer Hardware further helped him understand hardware components, troubleshooting processes, and practical technical skills, enabling him to confidently connect theory with real-life applications.

These immersive learning experiences played a transformative role in his academic journey, helping him secure an outstanding 95% in his Class X Board Examinations. Inspired by his achievements and experiences, Sumit has now chosen the PCM stream in higher secondary school and dreams of building a successful career in the field of science and technology.

Sumit’s mother, Gita, deeply values the opportunities Vidyapeeth has provided not just to Sumit, but to all her children. While her elder son Amit is now pursuing college after graduating from Vidyapeeth, her younger son Amar currently studies in Grade IX. Speaking with pride and gratitude, she shares, “As parents, we try our best to provide for our children, but Vidyapeeth has given them opportunities, guidance, and confidence. My sons have made the best use of everything they received here, and we truly believe they will have brighter and more secure futures.”

Rajnandani — “Quiet Strength, Big Dreams”

Equally inspiring is the journey of Rajnandani, an exceptionally hardworking student whose determination spoke louder than words. Coming from a modest family that moved from Bihar to Gurugram in search of better opportunities, she grew up watching her parents work tirelessly — her father as an auto driver and her mother as a house helper — to ensure a better future for their daughters.

Naturally shy and reserved, Rajnandani always preferred to let her hard work speak for itself. Her discipline, sincerity, and consistent academic effort helped her secure an impressive 83% in her Class X Board Examinations. She now intends to pursue the Science stream in senior secondary school and dreams of building a career in the field of Computer Science and technology.

A significant part of her growth has been shaped through Literacy India’s Vidyapeethprogram, which provided her with a nurturing environment and opportunities beyond traditional classroom learning. Participation in STEM-based activities, project-based learning, digital education, and interactive sessions helped strengthen her conceptual understanding while gradually building her confidence and communication skills. Exposure to technology-based learning further deepened her interest in Computer Science and broadened her awareness of future career opportunities in the field.

Through continuous mentoring, academic support, and experiential learning opportunities at Vidyapeeth, Rajnandani slowly began stepping out of her comfort zone and believing more strongly in her own abilities. Her journey reflects how even the quietest students, when given encouragement and opportunity, can dream big and move steadily toward a brighter future.

As Literacy India enters another decade of service, these young achievers remind us of a simple truth — when children are given opportunity, encouragement, and compassionate guidance, they do not just build careers; they rebuild futures, restore confidence, and inspire generations to come.
