Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore, half of its potential. They hold the latent abilities to bring about transformative changes. They are an asset, a beacon of hope, and a pillar of strength, with an indelible potential to transform the society they live in, and transfigure the world. Ignoring and sidelining the fair sex is hence, neither viable nor feasible keeping the interest and progress of society in mind. With 130 million girls out of school today, they need societal help to break down barriers that hold them back. One needs to staunchly support the little souls to achieve their ambitions in a continued pursuit, while being empathetic to the onerous challenges they constantly face. One in four girls is not in education globally, nor in employment. By impacting a more equitable and prosperous future for the girl children, where their fundamental rights to be safe, educated and healthy are ensured; the entire humanity stands to benefit from their innate potential to change the face of the world. There needs to be committed resolve to build a niche where girl children can unlock their potential, and achieve a future she chooses. As a result of patriarchal dynamics playing out at every level – stretching from community norms to family behaviors to individual attitudes, one can see stark ways in which girls are exploited and left behind across multiple dimensions. Their promotion and empowerment should form an integral part of the society, where dedicated measures be taken to reform and realign their lives.

In the heart of Srawandih Village, a young girl named Aparna Singh Sardar has risen, her indomitable spirit carving a remarkable narrative of triumph over adversity. At the tender age of 19, she has embarked on an extraordinary journey, transcending the limitations imposed by financial constraints and the shadow of adversity.

In the backdrop of a life filled with financial constraints, Aparna’s unwavering commitment and  determination shine as a guiding light for all. The livelihood of her family, comprising her father, two siblings, and herself, hinges precariously on her father’s modest earnings as an agricultural laborer. Higher education, a distant aspiration, seemed destined to remain a mere mirage.

However, fate took a benevolent turn when Aparna’s life intersected with Literacy India’s transformative Gurukul Project. This project not only bestowed upon her the gift of education but also nurtured her holistic development. Enrolled in Baghmundi High School Sarakdih, Aparna’s voyage of personal metamorphosis was set into motion. Gurukul, a benevolent provider, armed her with essential textbooks, tuition classes, vital supplies, and the invaluable guidance needed to illuminate her path.

Her extraordinary dedication and ardent pursuit of knowledge manifested in her academic results, where Aparna secured  47% in her class 10th examination in 2020.  Her crowning glory was the remarkable 88% she achieved in her class 12th examination in 2022.

Aparna’s tenacity and relentless pursuit of her dreams eventually earned her a coveted seat in the ANM course at Jamshedpur Nursing College, an accomplishment that eludes many due to its rigorous standards. Her journey exemplifies an unyielding spirit of courage and determination, steadfastly navigating through the tempest of adversity.

Guided by Literacy India’s sponsorship for her first year, Aparna is now confidently striding along the path towards her dream of becoming a nurse. Her story serves as an inspiring testament to the power of resilience, reminding us all that unwavering determination can transform even the most formidable of challenges into stepping stones to success.

Currently embarked on the journey of the 11th grade, Jaishree’s affinity for the realms of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

In the rustic hamlet of Village Belash, a story of extraordinary resilience unfolds as we meet Ravina, a 17-year-old young woman, whose life had known its share of trials and tribulations. Having lost her mother, Ravina found herself in the care of her father and grandfather, facing a future teetering on the precipice of uncertainty.

However, amidst the shadow of adversity, Ravina’s narrative takes a transformative turn, ushered in by her enrolment in the “2nd Chance” program—a unique and innovative initiative. This remarkable endeavor is a beacon of hope for young girls who have previously dropped out of school. It not only nurtures their confidence but also equips them with essential skills through education and training. The program’s resounding success has kindled a resurgence of motivation among these girls, enticing them to rekindle their educational journeys while simultaneously providing them with skill training, a powerful tool to reignite their life’s path.

In this journey of reclamation, Ravina stands out as a shining “Girl Icon,” recognized for her inspiring efforts in motivating her peers to return to the hallowed halls of learning. Her own educational voyage was abruptly halted following her mother’s passing, a circumstance that would have led many to abandon their academic aspirations. However, Ravina  harbored an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, a desire that refused to waver in the face of adversity.

Fortune smiled upon Ravina when the dedicated team from Literacy India arrived in her life during a survey. She seized the opportunity to express her deep interest in learning and acquiring new skills. With determination and hope in her eyes, she implored her grandfather to permit her to join the Learning Centre, where her dreams could find a nurturing sanctuary. Initially hesitant, her grandfather eventually yielded to the persuasive prowess of Literacy India’s team, allowing Ravina to embark on her academic odyssey.

Ravina’s dedication and enthusiasm have been nothing short of inspirational. Despite a daily trek of 4 kilometers to attend her academic and skill training classes at the Learning Centre, she displays unwavering commitment. Her indomitable spirit is evident in her academic achievements, as she successfully completed her 10th-grade examinations through the Open School in 2023, marking a significant milestone in her journey. To facilitate her daily commute, Ravina was gifted a brand-new bicycle by Literacy India.

“I never thought that I would get a second chance to study in life,” Ravina humbly shared. “And here I am, receiving an additional opportunity to acquire new skills from this Centre. I am also mastering the art of operating a sewing machine and altering dresses.”

Ravina’s story resonates as a symphony of determination and passion, a profound source of inspiration to her peers and to all who encounter her narrative. She has become a symbol of hope, a role model for girls in her village who face similar challenges, a living example that a second chance can indeed illuminate the path to a brighter, empowered future.
