Making education accessible and meaningful

Driven by three Es – Education, Empowerment and Employment – Literacy India’s flagship programme, Vidyapeeth, aims to make quality education accessible to all with a special emphasis on holistic development of children hailing from the lowest economic strata of society.

Vidyapeeth focuses on effectively sustaining the interest of the students through the use of multimodal approach to learning to strengthen the academic base and lay the foundation for future employability. Additionally, the project addresses a child’s nutritional and healthcare needs, engages the guardians, emphasises on self-expression through various forms of art, offers vocational training, and raises awareness about one’s civic and social rights and responsibilities.

Affiliated to the National Open School, the Vidyapeeth centre functions as a full-time schooling programme at Bajghera village, New Palam Vihar, Gurugram, and offers the following infrastructural facilities for classes Pre-KG to XII:

Admission is open to beneficiaries round the year, and performance assessment for each student is conducted bi-annually.

  • Introduction of code skilling and fundamentals of programming as a part of regular curriculum, and additional courses certified by National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT).
  • Development of leadership skills through annual investiture ceremony for the student office bearers.
  • Extracurricular activities like inter-house poetry and extempore competitions to encourage creative expression.
  • Raising social responsibility through special events on Earth Day, Anti-Tobacco Day.
  • Ensuring holistic development by imparting value-based education and encouraging participation in competitive sports.
  • Community engagement to eradicate gender inequality and prevent violence against girl child, including prevention of early marriage.

Highlights of 2019-20

  • Class IX and X students organised an awareness campaign on the right to vote and the importance of voting at JaatChopal village during an educational excursion before the Lok Sabha elections of 2019.
  • Workshops on self-defence training were held by volunteers and children were made aware of the good and the bad touch.
  • Students were taken to the bank to get a better understanding of how to go about operating ATMs and other tasks.
  • Academic weeks were organised for each subject like Math week, Social Science week, English week and various activities related to the respective subjects were conducted.
  • A summer camp was organised where activity-based techniques were used to teach subjects like statistics. Activities like Waste to Wonders were organised to raise awareness on environment conservation.
  • On Gandhi Jayanti, students organised an awareness campaign in Village Bajghera on cleanliness, disposal of waste and the hazardous impact of plastic on the environment.
  • An educational excursion was made to Netaji Subhas University of Technology, New Delhi, where around 20 NGOs were invited, and numerous activities were conducted.
  • Some students received bicycles from volunteers, to encourage them to go to school.
  • Students’ performance was continuously evaluated through various assessments. Revision classes were held 15 days before exams to clarify doubts. After each exam parent-teacher meets were organised to help improve the students’ performance.
  • 50 students of Class IX and X visited the National Gallery of Modern Art with volunteers from KPMG.
  • Students were taken to Shankar’s International Doll Museum, a museum set up by political cartoonist K Shankar Pillai.
  • On National Milk Day students visited the Amul factory, where they learnt the process of milk production.
  • Students were taken for an excursion to Butterfly park in Gurugram, where, as per butterfly enthusiasts, 27 species of butterfly are found.
  • On KPMG Global Cyber Day, its IT Team organised a session on cyber security, cyber bullying, cyber threats, online gaming, and use of social media.
  • Under the free mid-day meal scheme, students were given banana and eggs daily. Additionally, during summer, students were given buttermilk due to the rising temperatures.
